About Serruria

Serruria Ladies’ Residence is a home and learning environment for 193 Women of Virtue, built on the strong foundation of our five values: Respect, Responsibility, Loyalty, Pride and Tradition, and Participation. The constant, intentional practicing of these values in every activity that Serruria embarks on gives rise to the qualities of unity, life, love and loyalty as mentioned in the Huis Lied. Serruria Ladies’ Residence is an environment of empowering, inspiring and cultivating all 193 of its ladies. This means that every Serrurian has the platform to come into her own; so that she may leave with whatever degree she plans to obtain at Stellenbosch University as well as a PhD in Life! 

Serruria constantly works at achieving the above mentioned values and qualities with the following leadership structures:

- Residential  Head: Benita van Zyl – who is employed by the university to oversee the functioning of the residence

- Primaria: Sasha-Leigh Williams – democratically elected by Serrurians to direct the leadership in Serruria.

- Onder Primaria: Rodé Brand – responsible for residence safety and assisting the Primaria

- The HK (house committee): 10 Serrurians with specific portfolios which organises various activities, catering to a variety of Serrurians’ needs.

- Mentors: 15 Serrurians allocated to a number of first years to aid them with the transition into University life.

- Activity leaders: Serrurians in charge of events within a certain HK portfolio

- Committee members: Serrurians sign up for committees to ensure that events and activities within the HK portfolios go off without a hitch

- Section leaders: Serruria is divided up into 10 sections and each section votes on a section leader to ensure order, functionality and cleanliness within that living space

- Congress chairpersons: chair the congress meetings which are held quarterly.
