27 Million Chains

Modern-Day Slavery

27 million. That is the number of people held in slavery today. Denied all the rights of a human being, they are forced to live a life they have not chosen. It is crazy to think that this is happening in the 21st Century. When we think of slavery, we often think of pictures of slave markets in our history books. Yet there are slaves in every country- in South Africa -living right under our noses. We cannot ignore this insane cruelty. Below are some facts on slavery and ways in which you can join the fight for Justice.

Quick Facts

  •  There are more than 27 million slaves in the world today, and half of them are children.
  • There are more slaves today than in any other time in history.
  • An estimated 600 000-800 000 men, women and children are trafficked across international borders each year.
  • Every 30 seconds another human being becomes a victim of human trafficking
  • Young boys and girls in every city on the earth today are forced into sexual slavery
  • 1.2 million children are trafficked every year.
  • $90 is the average cost of a human slave around the world.
  • There are approximately 250 000 child soldiers worldwide.

Our Part

We are have a part to play in freeing people held in bondage. Every little action we take to end slavery makes a difference. Do not be overwhelmed by the problem, start being part of the solution. Here are some practical ways:
  •  A21 at SU. Throughout the year, this new society on Stellenbosch campus will be raising awareness about modern-day slavery and raising funds towards freeing slaves. If you want to join or show your support, check out/like their Facebook page at: https://www.facebook.com/pages/A21-at-SU/601819549904932
  • Pray. Pray for those in captivity. Pray for the traffickers and those who own slaves. Pray that more and more slaves are freed.
  • Create awareness. Tell others about slavery. You would be surprised at how many people live in total ignorance of the fact that there are still slaves today.
  • Keep informed. Educate yourself about modern-day slavery and the ways in which you can help to end it (check out the websites listed below).
  • Donate. Many organisations are dedicated to freeing slaves and need our help.

Vensters 2014

Vensters is one of the most anticipated events of any student’s university career. It’s a colourful night filled with music – and don’t you dare to forget about the dances performed by all the first years of the University of Stellenbosch.

Vensters is a fundraising event organised by the MAD² committee that attracts more spectators than any other event in the welcoming period. All the other events in the welcoming period actually lead up to this exciting event. The aim is to impress the judges and spectators by performing dance routines and an interesting story line performed by a few main characters. But to us, the first years, it’s all about working together, having fun and making new friends. I think it’s safe to say that every single lady of Serruria had the time of their lives on that Friday night of 31 January 2014.
